A quick cheat sheet to common aspect ratios and image sizes. Reference the various ratios with a base width of 1080 pixels. The ratios range from 1.91:1 to 1:1 and include landscape to portrait.
I chose the base width of 1080 pixels because it’s the maximum width an image can be on Instagram. This creates an easy reference point to compare the various heights of images at different aspect ratios.
Aspect Ratio | Orientation | Image Size |
---|---|---|
1:1.91 | Portrait | 1080 x 2062 |
9:16 | Portrait | 1080 x 1920 |
2:3 | Portrait | 1080 x 1620 |
3:4 | Portrait | 1080 x 1440 |
4:5 | Portrait | 1080 x 1350 |
1:1 | Square | 1080 x 1080 |
5:4 | Landscape | 1080 x 864 |
4:3 | Landscape | 1080 x 810 |
3:2 | Landscape | 1080 x 720 |
16:9 | Landscape | 1080 x 608 |
1.91:1 | Landscape | 1080 x 566 |
Common aspect ratios on Instagram include 4:5, 9:16, 1:1, and 1.91:1. Other ratios uploaded include 16:9, 3:2 and 5:4.
Common aspect ratios on Digital Cameras include 3:2, 4:3, 16:9, and 1:1.
When taking photos on the iPhone, aspect ratios include 3:4, 9:16, and 1:1. However, when cropping images through the Photos app, more ratios become available including 8:10, 5:7, 3:5, and 2:3.
Please note, although this is a long list, there are more aspect ratios: including cinemascope and others.
In another post, I explored cropping an image at various aspect ratios in landscape orientation. The post includes accompanying images of a California Cactus at different ratios.
